- Tea Flavonoid Testing Methodology Announced
- Total Flavonoid Analysis
- Explanatory Notes
- Recommended Labs
Results should be rounded to the nearest 5-mg (recommended by Dr. Frank Farrell - Chairman of the Tea Association of the USA's Technical Committee). He also recommends that any labeling of tea be based upon the analysis of samples of tea from at least 6 different batches or lots. This data should be averaged to obtain the final result. The variation of the method is estimated to be +/- 8%. This is variation is equal to or better than the majority of test methods approved by the AOAC.
Based upon this data, Dr. Farrell recommends that this procedure is ready for adoption by the Tea Association for use by the tea industry to determine the Flavonoid content of tea. Research is continuing at various locations to better understand the structure of all of the antioxidants in tea. If successful, this research may result in a change of the 0.84 factor at some future date. It is most likely that any such change would be to a higher value.
