Tea Council

Explanatory Note:

Members of the Tea Association of the USA are automatically members, at no extra cost, of the Tea Council of the USA.  This means that a portion of your annual Tea Association membership dues goes towards the generation of generic promotion of tea and for the special projects periodically undertaken as explained elsewhere on this site.

The Tea Council functions as the public relations arm for the Tea industry and its primary purpose is to encourage greater tea consumption by the American public.  The primary focus of the Tea Council of the USA is the furtherance of tea science and the establishment of tea as a healthy beverage.

Historical Notes:

The Tea Council of the USA was first formed in 1950 as a joint partnership between major tea packers, importers, and allied industries within the United States as well as tea producers in India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.  In recent years Kenya & Malawi have also become full members of the Tea Council.  Originally the Council was set up as a separate organization with a separate dues structure.  While it is still a distinct non-profit corporation, the dues structure has been modified to enable all Tea Association of the USA members to automatically be members of the Tea Council as well.

The Tea Council of the USA was established to allow Tea Producing countries doing business in the United States to have a means to contribute to the promotion of tea in this country without violating any National rules preventing them from joining foreign organizations.

Tea Council Tea Producing Country Membership Procedures:

Dues are calculated by your share of total tea imports coming into the USA for the last full year times ½ the total budgeted Tea Council Public Relations expenditures for the current year.  All calculations are based on official Tea figures published by both the Tea Association of the USA as well as the International Tea Committee.
